hello , i just started having problems with my gateway laptop.i as playin command and conquer the first time this happened , pc shut down , just lost power. so i rebooted , it worked for a few hrs , i started playing half life 2 and then after like 20 mins , shuts off again. i reboot and try to play but this time it shuts off in like half the time , i try just rebooting and closing all programs , taking all useless stuff off of the startup etc . laptop turns off before it can even load xp fully , now windows wont even get to the xp bboot screen , it just goes to where your supposed to press f8 to go to boot options and stays there , doing absolutely nothing.
i change ram , clean fan , swap ram around , held down the power button for 60+ secs without the battery. when i try to get to the recovery console with my xp disk it shuts off as soon as it says starting windows . my harddrive isent fualty , cause its really new and i just tested it with a usb adaptar thingie on a diff pc and it works , can get into all my docs etc , im really and loss as to what to do , i tryed everything i could think off , could someone help me please? suggestions ? sorry for the long post. help please.

Whoever gave you the CMOS battery suggestion is probably someone I wouldn't ask for advice again, unless you're looking for bad advice. There is not great evidence to suggest that a CMOS battery is bad. To check it out, boot into BIOS and make sure the time is correct. Shut down, give it 5 minutes and bot into BIOS again. If your system clock has lost time then your CMOS battery has to be bad.

As far as your PXE error, have you changed the boot priority in BIOS to indicate booting from LAN/Network as last on the list? The error you're getting could very well be that there is no default driver installed for the NIC - this would make perfect sense since you just switched the hard drive out. Can you boot from the optical drive? If so, manually select to boot from CD and try to install an OS. If you can't, then there is likely a problem with the Motherboard. Power supply is likely fine, as you are able to turn the machine on and I'm assuming that it winds up the hard drive.

So I am working on a Toshiba M45-s331 for a client. He left it on his bed overnight running. The problem I have now is the media error, pxe-061 error that everyone is talking about. First thing that I tried is to change the hd. Bought a brand new 160gb ide drive. Still get the error. I have heard "change the cmos battery(which I guess is soldered to the motherboard). But what does that have to do with the hard drive.
My guess is that something overheated, but I'm not sure what.
