I have a hp dv7-1157cl running vista 64bit recently the screen started going black(with the back light still on and working)at the hp logo screen. it will only flash the logo for an instance, then flash the windows loading screen, then the desk top, for barely a second, then it remains black, everything works fine on a external monitor. when I reinstalled the intel mobile 4 express chipset drivers with an update the screen worked for about twenty hours then reverted to the same issue. after updating the bios, and again reinstalling the chip set drivers it worked for about the same amount of time (with multiple restarts both times, by the way) and the went back to the same behavior, any advice would be welcome.. extremely

I have a Toshiba Satellite A105-S101, it's about 5 years old now. In the past few days when I wake it up from hibernation, mostly when it hasn't been hibernating more than ten minutes or so, the monitor goes dead completely. The first time it happened, it was AFTER showing the screen telling me that it was coming out of hibernation, when it should have gone to my Windows main screen. I had to restart the computer to get it to work. Tonight it also stopped working, even when I restarted the computer. I took the laptop apart, checked that everything was plugged in properly and now it works, but I'm afraid that it won't last. I haven't tried it with an external monitor because in order to get one I'd have to excavate it from a pile of other stuff and find somewhere to set it all up. There is no backlight when the monitor goes dead, it just doesn't show anything.

My laptop will beep, and then the backlight will randomly go out. I know there is a picture because if I reflect it in the light I can see... Somewhat.

the image on the screen started shaking, moving up and down and lines started appearing on the screen and going away. I restarted the computer but the screen did not want to power on. After a few tries it eventually came and worked fine for a while before it began doing the same thing again. This happened a few times until the day when no matter how many times i tried it did not come on.

Michael O,

it goes all black even when its running. I have rebooted about 50 times and it starts up ok, but when it comes to me entering my password it goes funny and then goes black. When it does go through, the screen is only half-full instead of a full screen.

Can you test the laptop with an external monitor. If the video on the external monitor also goes funny, there could be a problem with the video card.

Do you know if the video card is a discrete module? If yes, it's possible that the video card disconnected from the motherboard. You can genteelly press on the video card and push it back into the slot.
Also, try reseating memory modules.

Hi,

I have a Fujistu-Siemens Amilo M1437G laptop. 3 days ago but wife bumped her head into the back of it while she was waking up, as I had it in my lap in bed and since then my screen has gone all weird.

Primarily, it goes all black even when its running. I have rebooted about 50 times and it starts up ok, but when it comes to me entering my password it goes funny and then goes black. When it does go through, the screen is only half-full instead of a full screen.

When I hit the area where she hit (where the graphics card is) it helps and on one occasion it went back to normal, but then the screen went again.

I'm not sure if its a problem with the graphics card or fac etc etc.

Any advice please?

I am having the same problem all of a sudden. My computer screen goes almost entirely black. It happens everytime I come out of sleep mode, but otherwise, there does not seem to be any pattern. It seems to have started happening after a Norton update that I had been putting off for a very very long time. (I never accept updates as soon as they are published because at least 50% of the time I have downloaded on the recommended schedule, it has messed my computer up in one way or another). Has anybody solved the problem? If so, what is the solution? I have uninstalled Norton to no avail.

Hi, my 4 mo. new HP Pavilion Entertainment Laptop had a screen error today. The screen went ALL BLACK ( I was rendering architecture images, and using photoshop) but it had worked fine for several hours. I left for a few mins and the screen saver came on, then a pop up came up that said screen saver screen error and i said end program but then the screen stayed all black except for the toolbar, but if I opened another app. it would open but I wouldnt be able to see it except for the task manager. I cancelled all processes but nothing so I ended up restarting and it works now but should I worry about this? What do I do ?

Thank you!

The only way I have been able to currently get around my still pending problem of the "black screen" after months of trying to diagnose problem.
I can ONLY use my laptop using the battery... So, I can only stay on as long as my battery is charged. Once my battery gets critical I MUST turn off my laptop and connect the adapter to charge my battery. Please note: I MUST disconnect my adapter BEFORE turning my laptop on in order to maintain a "lit" screen.
Crazy!
