My laptop does not start or turns on and freezes

My Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop will not start for few days and then after few days later when I tried give another shot to restart. It does boot up then after few click it freezes and can turn off and boot up again.

So far I managed to boot up but in middle of boot up it freezes.

However, when I try to turn it back on, nothing happens. The screen doesn’t turn on, the fan doesn’t turn on. The only thing that happens is the LED lights turn on briefly.
I tried turning it on with and with out the battery and I get the same result.

This sounds like a possible problem with the laptop memory. It’s likely that one of the memory modules is not making good connection with the motherboard or failing. Try reconnecting both memory modules. Try removing memory modules one by one and test the laptop with each one separately. If you have only one module installed, try replacing it with a know good memory.

How the laptop is rebooting? Can you see anything on the screen? Does it have enough time to load Windows or reboots right away?

It’s possible that you have a problem with the video driver. Here’s something you can try.

Boot the laptop in VGA mode.
Turn on the laptop and when Toshiba logo appears on the screen, press F8. Select “Enable VGA mode” and press enter. In this mode all drivers are loaded, except the video driver. If your laptop works in VGA mode, most likely the video driver is damaged and has to be reinstalled.

While in VGA mode, uninstall the video driver and restart the laptop in normal mode. Can you? If you can, download and install the video driver again.

I have the following problem with my Toshiba Satellite SA60-122 (PSA60E).

It worked fine yesterday evening and I shut down Windows normally via Start->Shut down. No problems there. The laptop was then moved from the room and lay on a bed during the night, it was not dropped or anything like that.

Then, today when I wanted to continue my work the following happened: upon pressing the Power On button, the Caps-Lock, F10 and F11 LEDs light up for a few seconds. Cooling fan is audible. After a few seconds though, there is a sort of “click” to be heard coming from the area where the Hard Disk Drive is located. With this “click” the laptop immediately goes in dead mode. I guess this means the hard drive died overnight? As said above, the laptop was not dropped or otherwise roughly handled. If not a HDD death, what else could this be?

Looking forward to hear from y’all,

    Rick

    Rick Says:

It came back alive! Here’s what happened: because I wanted to know exactly what kind of HDD is inside the SA60-122, I took out the hard drive, noted the part number and put it back. Couldn’t resist the urge to try of course, so I switched on the laptop. After a Windows session in safe mode, restart and everything works fine!

    I’ll be darned:-)

I also experience that in my laptop. Sometimes it just start working and I just reboot it then its back to normal.

    Rick Says:

Well, the “click” returned today :-( But now that I know what to do, i.e. remove the HDD and put it back, I had it working in no time. Still, this worries me a bit, although Active@ Hard Disk Monitor v1.3.95 tells me everything’s OK.

It should be noted that this behavior occurred both times after the laptop was carried/moved from the desk. Apparently, even the slightest movement/handling is enough to somehow upset the HDD or even become dislodged?? Should I be looking for a replacement HDD?

    I’ll keep you posted!

    Rick Says:

What should I look for when buying a replacement HDD? 40GB ain’t much anyway these days so it might be a good idea to upgrade anyway.

    the plug arced a little . . .

I have an HP Pavillion dv6700 Entertainment PC. Several weeks ago my dvd/rom disappeared from the mapping and the drive was unrecognizable. This was fixed with a reboot. Then I found that opening large files of photos was causing the laptop to freeze. THEN when I would reboot, it would load WinVista and the icons appeared, then it froze up, but my animated curser was still moving. I quickly extracted all personal files off the laptop and put them on to an ext. hd. I removed all those files (100 gig) from the laptop. I deleted all unnecessary program files save three that I used frequently. Sims 3, Corel paintshop pro, and World of Warcraft. After removing all files I attempted a disk cleanup, which froze the laptop completely (animation mouse included). Rebooted and tried again, same result. I then attempted a disk defrag. That ran and ran and ran and 8 hours later was still running. I cancelled and reran it, six hours it still was running leaving me to wonder if it was working at all. Again tried doing more than one thing and the laptop froze. Went in to the performance and after an update it went from 3.4 rating to a 2.7 with regard to a Windows Aero?? Physical memory says there is no physical memory and 3/4 is cached? At this point i’m assuming it’s a memory related issue but not sure what i need to do now or why this suddenly became a problem. I am not a beginner at computers but seems recent models such as mine, I am. Step by step I can usually figure it out then. Please help based on your experience what I should start with replacing/testing and if that doesn’t solve it, next probable item… Thank you in advance!!!

    KAISAR HSAN,
It’s possible that your laptop fails to start because of a faulty memory module. Do you have two memory modules installed? Can you try removing them one by one and test the laptop with each module separately? It might work just fine when only one (good) module is installed.

Hello all, been having some problems with my HP Pavilion DV600, and it isn’t even 2 yrs old yet. The problem just started today, as I was using it. What happens is, I’ll power it up, all the lights will come on, fan instantly kicks on, think everything else follows suit, because I am able to see HP logo, and Vista sign in screens (if I even get that far). I can manage to sign in, maybe even get to a website, but soon after, my screen will freak out. Get all sorts of lines, and what would appear to be static.
Sometimes, I won’t even get that far, and as soon as I turn it on, the screen will go black, with again, what would appear to be static. Tried going thru BIOS, screen freaked out, tried repairing start up, screen freaked out. Really not sure what to make of it because I do get a picture, and things do work…sometimes, albeit not for very long.
Basically, before I go paying HP $400, which is what they siad it would cost, even though they had no clue what was wrong with it, I’m on here trying to find out if perhaps I can fix it myself or if anyone has an idea what could be wrong. Not a professional tech. by any means, but I believe it to be either the motherboard, or the heat sink.
Guy at HP said it was a problem with display hardware, but how can that be if I am getting a picture? On a side note, how can someone KNOW what they are going to charge, WITHOUT knowing what the problem is? ANY HELP WOULD BE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!!!

    Hello Guys,

For couple of days I have a weird problem with my laptop.

    I have a Acer Travelmate 4050.

The problem is starting up the Windows XP Home. When I push the on-button of the laptop, as always, first I get the logo of Acer. But it doesn’t go to the loading screen of Windows XP, as it should do.

However, sometimes, if I turn if on-and-off couple of times, I do see the Windows XP loading screen and then it starts up normaly.

I also have the problem with my LCD screen. Most of the time, some of the parts on the screen are not perfectly visible. For example, if I push the F2 button to go to the BIOS, I see strange letters. It is very hard to read what is shown on the screen; the letters are changing shapes and you see all new and strange shapes on the screen. This only happens when I am in BIOS.

If the systems do start up, and I am in My Document etc., I see some regions on the screen little pinkish. I also see a pinkish effect when I download things; you know the view of a file moving from the earth to the folder. In that view, I see a pinkish region between the picture of the earht and folder.

    Hope someone can help me.

    Best Regards,

    MCAN

Sound like a problem with the video card. Apparently, that’s why you have some problem with video in Windows.

Test your laptop with video on the external monitor. If you see same pinkish regions on the external video, again, most likely this is video card failure.

    Not sure what’s going on.
    Here’s what you can try.
Turn on the laptop and as soon as Dell logo appears on the screen press F8. Select “Last Known Good Configuration” from the menu, press Enter and see if it helps.

Here’s another trick. Unplug the AC adapater, remove the battery. Press on the power button for a few seconds. Now plug in the AC adapter and try turning it on.

But if I try to turn it off and on and off and on again, it goes back to work as perfect as it can be. No problem as long as it is on. It does not freeze nor stops. It even turns on perfectly when it was just turned off. The only problem is when it was shut down for a long time or for some hours. But every time it happens, I just have to keep turning it off and on and off and on until the Dell logo appears and then presto it will work perfectly again until the next time I turn it off for a long time. I would appreciate any suggestions on fixing my laptop (Asus X50N, 2 GB RAM, 120HDD). I have used my laptop for just over 3 years, no serious issues until this morning when it would not even boot up. The symptoms are as follows:

    1. The power light turns on for about 1-3 seconds, and the fan turns briefly for about a second and then shuts down completely.

I have tried the following so far:
    1. Tried another power supply unit
    2. Cleaned the fan
    3. Tried turning the power on and off several times
    4. I disassembled the laptop: removed the hard drive, dvd, wireless cards, modem, etc, removed the heat sink and checked the cpu was mounted properly (seemed ok, no discolouration),removed the ram, etc. I cleaned the fan.
    5. I assembled the motherboard with the following: re-assembled the cpu and heat sink back, inserted the ram, fixed the fan, and connected the battery only.
    6. When I press the power button (no matter how long I press it for), the green led lights up briefly (1-3 seconds) and the light for the mute/audio button lights up, and the fan turn for a second. Then nothing at all. I also tried this with the AC power supply connected, and it made no difference.

Any helpful solutions to fixing my laptop would be welcome. Many thanks, Thom
