Can I replaced damaged USB ports in my laptop?

Have a Sony Vaio laptop that had two USB devices attached to it. The computer was hit and the USB ports are messed up one was bent inside and will not work and the other works but is slightly bent. Can these be replaced or not?

In a laptop computer USB ports are soldered directly to the motherboard or USB board. If one of the USB ports gets damaged, it has to be unsoldered and replaced with a new USB port.
Yes, it’s possible to fix the broken port but you have to find a techician who can do that for you.

As an alternative, you can use a PCMCIA card with USB ports. You plug this card into the available PC card slot in your laptop and get 2 or 4 USB ports instead.

It’s hard to tell if you have hardware or software failure. Here are some steps you can go through:
    1. Remove all USB related entries in the device manager, restart the laptop and let it re-detect USB ports.
    2. Back up all personal files and reinstall Windows from scratch using recovery discs.
    3. If steps 1 and 2 do not help, most likely this is the motherboard failure.

By the way, I assume the USB device itself is good.

I have a double edged problem. The mouse pad (not sure what the proper term is for the area on a laptop you use to navigate is)quit working on my emachines E725 a few months ago. I just plugged a mouse into the USB port and moved on. Unfortunately, my sister’s dog stepped on the mouse cord and pulled the port reciever end out, and now niether of the two ports will work, so I have no way to move around but tabbing. I do not have a PC slot/port, but there is a network/ethernet port. I am trying to figure out if there is an adapter I could use to plug into the network port that ends in the receiving end of a usb port.
I know I could pull out the hard drive and make it into an external one to save the files, but a new laptop is just not in the budget for a while.
