Laptop has colorful horizontal and vertical lines on the screen

The laptop powers up and the screen illumination is ok, but instead of graphics I get horizontal and vertical lines on the screen, they are colorful and bright. Also if connected to external monitor I get a normal display, so I think the graphics chip is ok.. any ideas ?

If the laptop works fine with an external monitor, most likely the graphics chip is OK.

Here’s something you can try in order to fix the problem. It requires laptop disassembly so proceed on your own risk.

1. It’s possible that one of the connectors on the video cable got loose and the video cable doesn’t make good connection with the motherboard or LCD screen. Try reconnecting the video cable on both ends. Reseating the connectors might fix the problem.

2. It’s possible that the video cable is defective. Try replacing the cable.

3. Also, there is a chance this is the LCD screen failure. In this case you’ll have to replace the screen.

    Hi!

While I was viewing a movie on my laptop, my monitor suddenly freezes with a bunch of different coloured vertical lines on it.

The only way out of the issue is a hard shutdown (holding the power button until power loss) CTRL+ALT+DEL has no effect, and the hard drive does not respond to the command either. I can’t see anything on the screen but the pattern mentioned above.

I have no idea what is causing the issue, I have been using this laptop for 5 months only. The hard discs still have a large amount of space (about 250GB) which is unused. I wonder if it is a problem to deal with my display card or is it overheated?

Thank you very much for helping and I look forward to your reply!

Test your laptop with an external monitor connected to the VGA port.
If you see same colored lines (or no image at all) on the external monitor, it’s likely the video card failure.

Strange display issue. My HP Pavillion’s display looks normal when booting (spash screen etc). When in Windows however, the screen will start to fade and freeze or jump. Windows however is not frozen as I can hibernate it via keystrokes. Seems to be affected by movement of the screen. Thanks for any help.
