Laptop getting power but turns off after about 3 seconds

It looks like my laptop getting power and charging the battery but when I go to turn it on the power light goes on for about 3 seconds the the unit turns back off again. Any ideas???
It’s a Toshiba Satellite P300.

It’s possible that there is a problem with the AC power adapter. Maybe the adapter is not working properly under load. Test the laptop with another known good adapter.

If the laptop still fails even with another AC adapter, most likely this is the motherboard failure. You’ll have to replace the motherboard.

My Toshiba Satellite M35-S359 won’t boot normally. Comes on for a few seconds showing the Windows XP screen then freezes. It will boot in safe mode (most of the time).

I ran virus scans, no problems there. I tried restoring to a time before the problem (which did not help). I did get a “conflict error” once before it froze up, but no error code. It did boot normally for a while after problem first occured?

    Any ideas?

At this point it’s hard to tell if the problem is hardware or software related.
You said system restore didn’t work so I guess you’ll have to try reinstalling XP from scratch next.

Back up all personal files and run system restore disc. This will erase everything from the hard drive and load default factory image.

If the laptop still freezes after running the restore, it’s definitely the hardware problem.

I have an Acer with a similar issue. It takes a charge ok, and if it’s running it stays running. I have tried 2 different power adapters that work fine just to be safe.

The power light will come on, it will make some funny sounds, the power light will blink, then it will repeat those sounds, then two clicks and it shuts off. I repeat this process until it either boots up, or I give up. Someimes I don’t have the problem at all. I’m a college student and it makes it VERY difficult to get anything done at school when it won’t boot.

I called acer and they sagreed with me that it sounded like the power system inside the laptop. They told me it was covered under warranty, but then I found out I’d have to pay for shipping both ways, and the total cost would ahve been over 150 bucks for shipping. As a college student and as a father, I don’t have that kind of money to pay for shipping to have a defective laptop fixed. I have perfectly comfortable opening it up and tearing it apart, and taking a soldering iron to it if I have to. I no longer have access to an o-scope, so I can’t hook one of those up.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, I have a sony vaio laptop and everytime I turn it on the fan starts and the lights go and then it goes off. It will go in to the bios and stay there if I let it. I’ve check the memory, put cold air into it so if it was the fan not putting out enough. done it without the battery etc. I t is not on long enough to reinstall a cd. If I let it go after powering on it stays on for a few seconds then the screen gives a flicker and shuts down. Just wondering if any one knows what else to look for. Thanks

I own an advent 5311, and works fine with the AC plugged in. As soon as I take the AC out, the laptop will instantly switch off, with a noise of the laptop stopping, sometimes it happens after a few minutes. is this the battery being dead? its most frustrating!
also, i do not have a start up screen too after ive turned the laptop on, and the same when i ask to shut down, just has a blank screen and a bliking curser in the top left corner? and my graphics card has suddenly stopped working. i cant use screensavers or anything at the moment. could this be linked??

i have a toshiba satellite L35 and I am having problems charging it. I plug the ac adapter in and it won’t charge. play around with it, move the computer and it will start charging but that only works sometimes. then when it starts charging even the slightest movement causes it to stop. last time it wouldn’t charge I unplugged the ac cord and took out the battery. when i put the battery back in and plugged in the cord it started charging. I don’t know if it was a coinsidence or what since I have only done that once. my computer did this before but eventually it wouldn’t charge at all so we got a new cord. that cord worked for probably almost a year and now it is doing it again. what could be my problem?

    Hi ,
Everything works completely fine with my laptop. but I have very good question if you can give me solution. I have hp dv7 laptop with 6gb ram and 1 tb hard drive. my hard drive is combination of two 500 gb hard drive. I have insyde as vendor for bios. my question is that is there any way i can boot separately on each drive like we do on typical old desktop for completely different booting for different os. for ex. like we can change master and slave hard disk to boot. still it will show in my computer if you boot from any one. I really appreciate if you can give me some solution.

    Thanks,
    Brijesh

    @ Brijesh,

my hard drive is combination of two 500 gb hard drive.

Does it mean they are configured as RAID? Do you see just one 500GB in My Computer instead of two drives?

my question is that is there any way i can boot separately on each drive like we do on typical old desktop for completely different booting for different os. for ex. like we can change master and slave hard disk to boot. still it will show in my computer if you boot from any one.

If hard drives in your laptop configured as RAID, you’ll have to disable it in the BIOS and set them as regular hard drives.
In this case you should be able to install different OSes on different drives. This is my guess.
