Laptop freezes after showing Windows XP screen

My laptop will not boot normally. Comes on for a few seconds showing the Windows XP screen then freezes. It will boot in safe mode (most of the time).

I ran virus scans, no problems there. I tried restoring to a time before the problem (which did not help). I did get a “conflict error” once before it froze up, but no error code. It did boot normally for a while after problem first occurred.

Any ideas?

It’s hard to tell if your problem is software or hardware related without running some diagnostic tests.

In many cases Windows freezes like that because of memory failure. You can download Memtest86+ and run it on your laptop. If memory fails test, replace it with a new module. If memory passes test, move to the next step.

You said the system restore didn’t fix the problem, so you’ll have to try reinstalling Windows from scratch. Back up all personal files and run system recovery disc. This will erase the hard drive and reimage it back to factory defaults. There is a good chance that reimaging the hard drive will fix your problem.

I’m having issues with my Alienware m17x freezing when switching to battery. The battery is fully charged, the system doesn’t die it just freezes and requires the wonderful hold the button down to restart to solve fix after I hook it back in.

I have a Gateway laptop and XP professional. Laptop has started making a power down sound then freezes up. The closest I can come to describing the sound is the sound on cartoons when missles have been fired and are coming down. Anyway, the laptop will make that sound, then freeze. Sometimes it will then “unfreeze” and continue, then make the sound and freeze again, until finally it is really “frozen” and the task manager won’t work, the curser won’t move, etc. You have to hold down the power button to do a hard boot, then it says it was closed down improperly, the blue screen appears, it says it can’t find the operating system. Rebooting several times in a row will usually allow it to find the windows XP again, but then the sound thing starts all over. I have never seen this problem and can’t find anything that sounds like this sort of thing on the internet. Can you help?
