I have a Gateway laptop and XP professional. Laptop has started making a power down sound then freezes up. The closest I can come to describing the sound is the sound on cartoons when missles have been fired and are coming down. Anyway, the laptop will make that sound, then freeze. Sometimes it will then "unfreeze" and continue, then make the sound and freeze again, until finally it is really "frozen" and the task manager won't work, the curser won't move, etc. You have to hold down the power button to do a hard boot, then it says it was closed down improperly, the blue screen appears, it says it can't find the operating system. Rebooting several times in a row will usually allow it to find the windows XP again, but then the sound thing starts all over. I have never seen this problem and can't find anything that sounds like this sort of thing on the internet. Can you help?
