How do I recover software on Toshiba Satellite laptop?

I have a Toshiba Satellite R15 with Windows XP. It doesn’t boot, it says that \system32\hal.dll is missing. I have a recovery disc, but nothing happens when I put in. Is there something special I should do?

Do you understand that running the recovery disc will erase everything from the hard drive? Please back up all personal files before starting the recovery process. All personal data (music, videos, pictures, documents, etc…) will be gone.

In order to backup all personal files, you’ll have to remove the hard drive and connect it to another working computer using an external USB enclosure.

Here’s how you can boot your Satellite R15 laptop from the recovery disc and start the recovery process:

1. Insert the recovery disc into the DVD drive.
2. Restart the laptop and as soon as Toshiba logo appears on the screen press on the F12 key. This will take you to the boot device menu.
3. Using the arrow key, select the CD/DVD drive and press enter.
4. The laptop will start booting from the recovery disc.
5. Follow instructions on the screen.

    pete maldjian,

as soon as i connect the screen it shuts down at boot

This description is not very clear. Do you disconnect the video cable from the motherboard? The laptop will not start at all when the LCD screen is connected?

after booting withe external screen it will com on and the display is shrunk down on ri. side.

    Maybe wrong screen resolution settings?

I am not sure where to post a new question, I think I am doing it the correct way,at least as I understand the instructions under “Ask a question” section, if not I apologize.

I have a Toshiba Satellite 2805-S402 laptop that will not start. The laptop was not used for a while and when I start it up I get the following error message.
    “Bad Checksum [CMOS]”
    “Check System then press [F1]”
I know what is causing this, the cmos battery has lost its charge and the BIOS needs to be rest to factory defaults and then when booted into Windows to correctly set the system time.
Everything I can find doing searches as well as on the Toshiba website tells me that I need to hit the F1 key to get into the BIOS set up. Well when I do this nothing happens and I am now at a loss to know what to do. Some of the Toshiba’s you hit the F2 key but on my model that takes you to a menu to select what device you want to boot from should you want to boot from something other than the hd.
Do any of you have any Ideas as to what might be wrong?
    Thanks,
    Robert

I have a Satellite A85 whuch will boot up to Desktop but will not display any icons or the taskbar, so I cannot access the Start button. Everything that does show up on the desktop is frozen and cannot be moved. In order to shut off the laptop, I remove the battery and disconnect the power supply. I do not have a recovery disk as I bought it from my son when he was stationed in Irag and he had lost all the papers and CD.

Can I restore wihtout needing a Recovery CD?
