Hope someone can point me in the right direction (LCD Screen, Crimped Cable, Backlight, Battery?????)

I have a Toshiba L505D-S5992 Satellite laptop. Recently the display began to dim after the laptop screen is lifted to a certain point (i.e. 1/2 way). The symptoms after hitting that 1/2 mark (same every time) are consistent with an Inverter/Backlight failure. I replaced the Inverter and still have the same problem. The LCD is normal (no spots, lines etc… until the LCD screen is lifted to 1/2 way then the screen Darkens to black although you can still feintly see the image if you shine a light or look closely enough. Attaching an external monitor works fine.

I think this is problem with the video cable. Most likely the backlight fails because the vide cable not making good connection with the motherboard or the video cable is defective.

Here are a few things to try. You’ll have to go though some laptop disassembly steps.

1.Remove laptop keyboard and reseat the video cable connector on the motherboard. Make sure it’s plugged correctly, all the way in. Test laptop after that.
2. Access the back side of the LCD screen and reseat the video cable connector on the back. Test laptop after that.
3. Replace the video cable with a new one.

Then I shut it off because nothing would work and tried turning it on and it came to a white screen and after ten mins could see a screen that said something but the image was super blurry and I could not read it, only see an outline of the box on the screen.
Possible video card failure. This Dell laptop might have a problem with the graphics card failure.

Most likely it’s either failed screen inverter or failed backlight lamp inside the LCD screen. Which one is causing the problem? You cannot tell without testing the laptop with a known good inverter or LCD screen.
Both the inverter board and backlight lamp have very similar failure symptoms.

If you don’t have spare parts and have to guess, try replacing the inverter board first. If it doesn’t help, replace the LCD screen.

This guide explains how to get inside the laptop. This is guide for HP G50/G60/G70 notebooks. Also, will work for Compaq Presario CQ50/CQ60/CQ70 notebooks.

Also, your problem could be related to the video cable or motherboard but it’s not very common.

My granddaughter tripped over my power cord on my Compaq laptop now my screen shuts down like after I start it the screen goes black. If I touch the display switch I can not see whats on the screen. If I angle it right I Can see my Windows screen. Think I should get another switch and replace it? Or any one got any other idea what to do?

I doubt your problem is related to the display switch.

From your description it sounds like the laptop has either failed inverter board or failed backlight lamp inside the screen.

If the laptop was dropped, probably the backlight lamp was damaged. It means you’ll have to replace the screen because the backlight lamp mounted inside the screen.

If I would have to fix the laptop, I would probably go though the following steps:
1. Test the laptop with an external monitor, just to make sure that external video still works fine. This will confirm that your video card/motherboard operate properly.
2. Reseat video cable connectors on the motherboard, LCD screen and inverter board, just to make sure it’s not just loose connection.
3. Replace the LCD screen and if it doesn’t help, replace the inverter board.

Your Pavilion dv6 laptop should have eight screw covers on the front bezel.
Remove those eight covers and remove all eight screws hidden under those covers.
After that you remove the bezel and access the screen.

You’ll find detailed instruction with pictures in the service manual. This is a 5.5MB pdf file and might take some time to download.

The display panel disassembly instructions are shown on the page 158 in the “Recycling” chapter.

I just drop my Dell 1420 laptop and ask for some technicians , there is a display but there is no light, they said my laptop’s problem was LCD LIGHTS. Can i just buy any 14.1 LCD lamp?

Most likely the screen has no light because you damaged the backlight lamp. The backlight lamp is mounted INSIDE the LCD screen. It’s very hard to replace the backlight lamp and if you try, there is a good chance that you damage the screen. Do it only if you have nothing to lose. You can use these instructions for replacing the backlight lamp.

The display disassembly instructions could be found in this service manual for Dell Inspiron/Vostro 1420 laptops. It is not necessary to separate the display panel from the laptop. Simply remove the screen bezel, disconnect the screen from the video cable and replace it with a new screen.

Here’s a guide for replacing the screen in Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. The guide shows how to separate the inverter board from the LCD screen. Just in case if you purchase a new screen without inverter. You can find a new replacement LCD screen on eBay.

One of my visitors was experiencing a problem with the laptop screen brightness after the screen replacement. Here’s how he fixed the problem.

I just replaced the lcd on my Dell C610 with one I bought from a reputable seller on eBay. Everything went well, but when I fired it up I found the display much dimmer than it was before. Checking part numbers, I came up with my old Hitachi TX36D98VC1CAC and the new part, TX36D98VC1CAE.

Here are some troubleshooting steps I went through:

1. Swapped inverters, but nothing improved.

2. I’ve got the keyboard brightness cranked all the way up. Didn’t help.

3. I’ve got the brightness in the BIOS cranked all the way up. Didn’t help.

4. Updated BIOS to the latest version. Didn’t help.

Finally, reinstalled the video driver and it fixed the problem. The new screen is as bright as before!

My problem is that i am getting a random black screen from time to time, this happens while using various apps from internet explorer to my dj software. When this happens the backlight is still on (clearly visible in a dark room. I thought i would try hooking it up to my desktop monitor when this happened the last time, to my surprise it worked fine, it had not crashed, clear image on the external monitor, black screen on the laptop display (but the back light was on). Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

1. Make sure you are running the latest version of BIOS. Download and upgrade the BIOS if needed, it might have a fix for your intermittent video problem.

2. It’s possible that the video cable is not making good connection with the LCD screen or motherboard. Reconnecting/reseating the cable might help.

3. Could be bad video cable or LCD screen.

I don’t know why it would do that.

I think there could be a problem with the screen cable. This cable connects the laptop LCD screen to the motherboard and apparently the cable is bad and has to be replaced. That would be my guess.

Here’s what you can do in order to narrow down the problem. Test your laptop with an external monitor attached to the VGA port. Set your laptop to output video to both, the internal screen and external monitor. Now touch the lid or move the laptop. If the laptop screen goes black or dim, but you still can use the laptop with the external monitor, most likely it’s related to the screen cable. Apparently it has damaged wires inside the harness and there is a short inside the harness when you move the lid. If that’s the case, the screen cable has to be replaced.

I have a Dell D810 laptop and the LCD recently went dark. When starting from cold, the boot screen comes up just fine (normal brightness) but as soon as it gets to the logon screen it goes dark. When taking it out of sleep mode the screen will also light up normally but only for about 2-5 seconds then it goes dark again.

You can see the desktop icons if you try the flashlight trick so I figure its either the inverter or backlight.

Before I order an inverter I thought I’d throw in what seems to be unusual with my problem:
If I keep the brightness at halfway or less I can get the screen to stay lit all the time. If I raise it above half, that triggers the screen to go dark. I adjusted my power settings to only have the LCD brightness at half all the time.

Also my power settings are set up to have the LCD screen turn off when the lid is closed, and if I close the lid (if the screen has gone dark and then reopen the lid the screen lights up again as normal, but only as long as I make sure to keep the brightness down.

BTW- I did notice my screen having a pinkish tone when it would wake up, before the screen actually started going dark. It still has that pinkish hue when starting up from cold and it seems that the pinkish tone goes away after it has been on for awhile (20-30min?).

Does this point more towards an inverter or backlight?

This description fits both, bad inverter board and bad backlight lamp.

If I keep the brightness at halfway or less I can get the screen to stay lit all the time. If I raise it above half, that triggers the screen to go dark. I adjusted my power settings to only have the LCD brightness at half all the time.
Again, could be either bad inverter or backlight lamp but I lean more towards the lamp.

BTW- I did notice my screen having a pinkish tone when it would wake up, before the screen actually started going dark. It still has that pinkish hue when starting up from cold and it seems that the pinkish tone goes away after it has been on for awhile (20-30min?).
This time your description sounds more like backlight lamp related issue.

Does this point more towards an inverter or backlight?
For some reason, I think you have a faulty backlight lamp. That would be my guess.
