I bought an old Toshiba Satelite which arrived with a smashed screen, when switched on showed a blank white screen, changed screen, still lights up white. Changed the screen lead, still lights to a blank white screen. External VGA works fine. Whats left motherboard perhaps?. Am I right in thinking that it cannot be the inverter as the screen lights up.
You are correct. If the screen lights up (even without any image), the inverter board works properly.
You’ve replaced the LCD screen with video cable but still experience the same problem, so it must be related to the video card. Most likely the video card is integrated into the motherboard, so it’s the motherboard problem.
The screen on my laptop Compaq nc6120 gets dim as I plug the power adapter and it will be ok as I unplug the power cable. Would there be any idea that can help?
I think there is nothing wrong with your laptop, it’s just settings in the power management software. Usually you can adjust screen brightness separately for AC mode (when laptop runs from the power adapter) and battery mode (when laptop runs from the battery). Apparently, in your case the screen brightness has been reduced for the AC mode.
Go to the power management utility and turn the screen brightness all the way up for the AC mode. On some laptops (some Dells for example) you can change LCD screen brightness in the BIOS setup menu.
I have a Toshiba Satellite notebook. Recently, and for no apparent reason, when I pushed the power button to turn on my notebook, the computer would turn on, but the monitor would not show any image or even any sign of light (doesn’t even light up). Is this possibly a driver issue, or will I have to get a new monitor.
No, it’s not a driver issue because this problem occurs as soon as you start the notebook, even before Windows (and drivers) start loading.
First, you’ll have to test your notebook with an external monitor attached to the VGA port on the side of your notebook. If both internal and external monitors have no image, this problem is not related to the notebook screen.
When I move or lift up my laptop video on the screen becomes garbled and everything freezes. The laptop works fine as long as it stays on the desk but when I lift it up video goes bad and cursor freezes. After that I have to do a hard reboot.
Today I had to troubleshoot a laptop with similar problem.
The laptop was working fine on my bench.

I have problem with my screen flickering a rainbow of colors even when I was at the Windows bootup logo. But when i using a video output everything is fine. Any Idea?
I have a Compaq Presario V3000 Series Notebook PC.
The external video works fine, so your problem is not software related. I don’t think it’s motherboard or video card related problem either, otherwise you would get garbled video on the external monitor.
The backlight on my laptop LCD lights up..but there is no image. Even when its Posting (before booting in the OS) there is no image.
HOWEVER if i put pressure on a corner of the LCD, the image shows up.
Is it a bad inverter or video cable or other?
This problem is not related to the inverter. Your LCD screen lights up (even without image) so the inverter board and the backlight lamp work fine.
Most likely you have a problem with the LCD screen and it has to be replaced. Apparently, the LCD controller board has a bad solder joint and it makes contact only when you press on the screen.
My Dell Inspiron 1420 was dropped, and the LCD is broken. Every thing else is doing ok. Is broken LCD harmful for eyes? From where can I buy a screen with the lowest price, and can I replace it myself? I have basic electronic knowledge.

I don’t think that broken LCD is harmful for eyes, it’s just hard to use the laptop with a broken screen. You can easily replace the LCD screen yourself if you follow disassembly steps in this service manual for Dell Inspiron 1420 series laptop.
By the way, it is not necessary to remove the whole display assembly from the laptop. Simply remove the display bezel, disconnect the LCD screen and replace it with a new one.
You can find a new LCD screen online but I think the cheapest price will be here.
I cracked the LCD screen on my HP Pavilion laptop. When it cracked, there was only a red tinted picture on the left third of the screen. I replaced the LCD screen and when I turned the computer on, you could BARELY see a faint image. I got a new inverter and put it in and the image remains very dark and basically unviewable. Where do I go from here?
You didn’t have to replace the inverter. If two-thirds of the cracked screen worked fine and you could see the image, there was nothing wrong with the inverter board.
First of all, check all connections between the video cable, LCD screen and inverter. Try reseating all connectors and test the laptop again. If you still have the same problem, try installing original LCD and inverter back.
As soon as I boot up the laptop, there is a one inch wide white bar running from top to bottom in the middle of the screen. It stays all over from the bootup till I switch off my laptop.
Please let me know how I need to proceed to get this problem resolved. Is it a problem with LCD or some video cable. I have a Toshiba P35 Satellite 17″ laptop.
I’m pretty sure your problem is related to the LCD screen and is not related to the video cable.

If your laptop looks like that, you’ll have to replace the LCD screen. You can buy a new LCD screen for your Toshiba Satellite P35 laptop here.
I have a Dell Latitude D800. I’ve had it about 3 years and about 2 months ago, I opened up the screen to a dim (faint) image. After a review of common problems, I know that my backlight is failing to come on. Typically I can close the lid and re-open it after a few seconds and I can receive 5 - 20 seconds of lit screen before it goes dim. Depending on how long it takes Windows to login, I can usually do a Send/Receive and sometimes even read/reply to an email or two.
I took off the LCD frame and reseated the video cable to the LCD, as well as the plug going into the FL inverter from the laptop. That didn’t fix the problem but it didn’t get worse.
Also, I’ve connected an external monitor successfully. The display on the other monitor has 0 issues.
Most likely your problem is related to the screen inverter. The screen inverter works as a power supply for the LCD screen backlight. When inverter fails, the screen backlight stops working at all or it works for a short time, as in your case. You have a good chance to fix the problem if you replace the inverter board witch is not very expensive and is easy to access. You can find a new inverter board here and replace it using these instructions.
