My laptop keeps restarting

My laptop keeps restarting and will not let me go to safe mode or anything. It keeps restarting. Has any one had this before? Know what to do? My memory is inserted properly.

Try replacing memory with a known good stick. Maybe your memory module is bad.

If you have two memory modules installed in the laptop, try removing them one by one. If the laptop still keeps restarting with each module installed separately, I guess it’s not related to the memory failure.

Find a voltmeter and test the AC power adapter, make sure the adapter outputs correct voltage.

Try minimizing the system as much as you can. Remove battery, hard drive, DVD drive, etc… If the problem still exists, most likely this is the motherboard failure.

  1. my laptop is not showing on the screen

  2. Hi, My laptop will not start up completly. I can push the power on button, and right before the logo is supposed to appear it will restart itself, and will continue on this loop. I have held down the power button in the middle to shut it off completly and let it sit for awhile and tried again, with the same results. I have also left the computer run this loop all night with no success. I have noticed the fan will come on really high at the start of the process and then slow down before it restarts itself. The fan is working and the computer is not hot. The computer is always hooked up to the A/C adapter and very rarely do i rely on the battery. any suggestions?

    Bryan,

Could be faulty memory module, faulty hard drive or bad motherboard. I cannot tell which one is causing the problem without looking at the laptop.
I posted your question ans some suggestions here.

I’m having a similar issue, my laptop a gateway m6850FX just keeps resetting after 3 seconds of being turned on. I have cleaned out the dust from inside the case checked ram, ram sockets, the HDD. I’ve tried rebooting with different ram, different HDD, booting with just the ram and cpu. rebooting after a power drain “removing the battery and holding the power button for 30 seconds”, removing the cmos battery for a minute and still no luck. Sometimes It stays on up to 15 seconds sometimes it just shuts off after 3 like I said. This all started after my original HDD died. After purchasing a new one it started doing this. I also had a friend with the same model laptop try out my cpu to verify that it wasn’t that and it worked fine. I contacted Gateways awesome tech support….. After explaining to him everything I tried he told me that my notebook was out of warranty and it would cost me $199 plus shipping with no guarantee that they could fix it, without offering any suggestions what he may think it could be. So now before I treat this laptop like the photocopier from Office space I just want to make sure there’s nothing else I could possibly try that maybe I overlooked any help would be appreciated.

Most likely this problem is related to the motherboard failure and the motherboard has to be replaced.

If the laptop keeps rebooting when you have only three main components: motherboard, CPU and RAM, one of these components is bad.
You tried replacing memory. CPU failures are very rare (from my experience one or two CPUs for one or two hundred motherboards), so let’s say it’s not the CPU failure. The only thing left is the motherboard.

    I guess I just saved you $199+shipping. :)

Thanks for the fast response, yeah that’s what I was afraid of. It’s not worth it to replace the motherboard so I guess its time to buy a new notebook. I sure hope the next one lasts a bit longer than 15 months.

  7. My averatec N1200 windows 7 starter notebook reboots itself after a short while. When it starts up again it takes me to the black screen that says an error occurred and asks if I want to run in safe mode or start normally. When I select to start it normally it works perfectly without rebooting. The thing is that whenever I turn it off and on again it does the same thing. Oh yeah and its brand new.

I have a Toshiba Satellite U405 which I disassembled so I could fix the fax as it was scraping the plastic in the housing. I fixed the scraping fax noise but when I put tha laptop all back together it will not boot up. I made sure I plugged everything back in correctly and plugged the power cord into the wall AC but nothing turns on. What should I try next? I hope I didn’t fry it when disasembling it.

  11. I think I have the same problem but the problem I am encountering is that my laptop keeps on resetting once it is started booting up this happens when I plugged in the power adapter but I unplugged it the laptop is perfectly working but now it runs on a battery but I want to use the power as well cause the power is not enough for my work.

The battery can last for 3hours mostly but that is not enough for me so if anyone can help me solve this problem I humbly asked for your advice and assistance.

I hope that anyone encounter this would be gladly to share what he/she had done to solve this kind of problem. I really need HELP from every corner of this forum, if by chance you can’t be clearly understood what I’m trying to say here please let me know straight.

    Kind Regards,

    Uere

There is a chance that your hard drive is damaged.
First of all, I would recommend to back up personal data if you have something important.
You can get data from the hard dive with an external USB enclosure.

After that run Dell diagnostics and test the hard drive. If the hard drive fails test, you’ll have to replace it with a new one and reinstall Windows OS.

  16. My laptop is so important because it is my only form of communicating with my family and it has so many important things on it. I cannot afford to take it to a repair shop right now. Last night there was a spider on me and my laptop ended up falling about 2 feet to the floor because I freaked out. I turned it back on and it kept going to system restore, or it would go to a screen offering two other options to either do start up repair or start normally. Today I got home and turned the laptop on and it ran normal for about 5 minutes before it started with restarting.

I have a Gateway MD2614u, and the only issue I noticed physically was that inside on the left where the SD card and another big card go in there is a larger object loose in there. I cannot see it but I can hear it and it sounds kinda large-ish. The fan sometimes sounds loud then dies down to being silent, but this has happened before…not often though. It was on at the time of falling. When the laptop loaded all the way once it was just fine as far as all my valuable information.
