One key on keyboard does not work

I have an HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop and my “Y” key doesn’t work. Sometimes when I push the “T” key it will type a “Y” with it and act as if the “Y” key is stuck down and results in a “YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY…” any idea as to why this is happening and if so how do I fix it?

Most likely this is keyboard related problem and the keyboard has to be replaced.

You can find a new replacement keyboard if you Google the part number from the bottom side of the original (defective) keyboard.

The keyboard part number will look something like that 431414-001 or 431416-001.

Hey I’m not sure if this question, but my problem isn’t really in your category list. Okay I have an HP Pavillion dv4. I have had many minor glicthes- nothing too serious until today. This may sound stupid, but it gets annoying. Okay I recently plugged by computer into the TV via the HDMI port on my laptop. I played with it and then closed the top. Later I came back and found that the screen was blank and nothing responed. So I pressed the power button for 10 seconds and it shutdown. Now I’m using it again the CAPS lock light and the scroll lock light keep blinking at me. I’ve tired pressing the buttons to turn them off and I’ve tried restarting and system restores. What’s the problem? (if at all possible could you look at this soon. my two-week warrenty thingie ends in 4 days. I hope I can exchange this one for a new one if we can’t slove this)

Strange problem, not sure what’s going on. Try this.
Turn off the laptop, unplug the AC adapter, remove the battery and wait for a few minutes. Now plug everything back in and turn the laptop on. Does it help?
If you still experiencing the same problem, I would suggest replacing the laptop. There could be a hardware related problem.

Ok, so i just spilled water on my dell inspiron 1420 keyboard, and i want to remove it so it can dry out, and later replace it if it still doesnt work, i have removed all the screws from the back acept for the ones hold other components, and can lift the edges, but when i try to take the keyboard completely off, it wont budge, as if connected by the center. i thought maybe my LCD screen has to come off first, but i cant seem to get that off either. plz help, i need this laptop for school.

Hey laptopfreak, I was wondering if you could help me.

The key beyween \ and x will not work. I don’t know why this is happening, but it just will not input anything when I press it. I’ve removed the key to try pressing the rubber thingy underneath the key, nothing. I’ve actually used the German keyboard setting to try to remap the key so it’s below the ‘y’ key instead (I tried this when I started this post) but it won’t work.

Which leads me to believe that it’s not the keyboard that’s the problem, really, but because I can’t think of anywhere else to put this it’s going in here, is that OK?

I have tried every other key on the board and all of the others work, it’s just that one. Can you help?

    Much appreciated,
    Andrew

    Laptopfreak,

Sorry, I rebooted and the z key’s working now. I found the problem; a program I thought I’d uninstalled had bound the z key to one of its functions and then had encountered an error and closed down, apparently removing the function from the z key… I have now (I believe) uninstalled the program completely through deleting the program file, so the problem hopefully won’t occur again :)

    Thanks!

    Hi,
I have a Dell Inspiron 2200. When I type the letter “U” the letter “I” also appears and vice versa. It also happens with j and k; m and ,; y and ]. Also when I type the letters h or e, the cursor jumps up to the windows internet explorer toolbar search window. I tried calling Dell, but can’t get through to a live person there. It is a few years old and out of warranty but has been used very little. What could the problem be? Is it an easy/inexpensive fix? Is it worth fixing or should I scrap it and get a new one?
    Thanks for your time.

    Hi,
I have 2 HP laptops of the dv6000 series. One of which I bought in Germany and it is dv6133eu, the other I bought in the Czech Rep. and is dv6920ec. Now I want to replace the German keyboard of the dv6133eu with a new Czech keyboard, but the HP service said they don’t provide service for the model I bought in Germany and I must contact HP Germany. So I wonder if I can detach the Czech keyboard of the dv6920ec to replace in the dv6133eu, and buy a new one for the dv6920ec, which is a Czech model? Please kindly reply also to my email.
    A lot of thanks.

  15. I replaced my key on my Dell Laptop now I can’t get it to work but all the other keys are fine. Would should I do?

    Kristen,
Remove the key cap and press directly on the rubber nipple found under the key. Does it work this way? Will it type the letter when you press on the nipple? If it doesn’t work, most likely you’ll have to replace the keyboard.

Apparently the NumLock function is enabled. You’ll have to disable it.
Hold down the Fn key and at the same time press once on the NumLock key located somewhere in the top row.
Does it fix your problem? :)

Hey Laptop Freak,(Dell Inspiron 1545) im having trouble with just the key ‘a’ Im currently using the on screen keyboard to use the letter “a”. it was working fine last night then when i turned my computer on this morning it had stopped working.

i am unaware on how to fix this problem. i’ve tryed uninstalling & reinstalling the Keyboard, too no success. all drives are up too date.

  24. It worked earlier today and nothing happened to the keyboard – no drops, no spills. All the letter keys work. The`~ keyworks, 5, 6, -_,+= but the numbers one through four and the numbers seven, eight, nine and zero don’t work at all. Obviously, there is damage to the pad but I can’t understand what is going on.

Unfortunately, you cannot fix this problem. You’ll have to replace the whole keyboard.

First of all, try booting your laptop from a live Linux CD (you can use Knoppix) and test the keyboard in there.
Heres’ how to get, burn and start Knoppix: http://www.datarecoverytutorial.com/how-to-recover-files-from-laptop-with-crashed-windows/
If the keyboard works properly while running Knoppix, most likely this is a software related problem. Apparently your Windows is not working properly and has to be reinstalled.
