Random black screen from time to time

My problem is that i am getting a random black screen from time to time, this happens while using various apps from internet explorer to my dj software. When this happens the backlight is still on (clearly visible in a dark room. I thought i would try hooking it up to my desktop monitor when this happened the last time, to my surprise it worked fine, it had not crashed, clear image on the external monitor, black screen on the laptop display (but the back light was on). Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

1. Make sure you are running the latest version of BIOS. Download and upgrade the BIOS if needed, it might have a fix for your intermittent video problem.

2. It’s possible that the video cable is not making good connection with the LCD screen or motherboard. Reconnecting/reseating the cable might help.

3. Could be bad video cable or LCD screen.

Satellite A215-S4757: Screen started shaking, moving up and down

I purchased my laptop about a year and a half ago and had no major problems till this week.
It began a week ago when the image on the screen started shaking, moving up and down and lines started appearing on the screen and going away. I restarted the computer but the screen did not want to power on. After a few tries it eventually came and worked fine for a while before it began doing the same thing again. This happened a few times until the day when no matter how many times i tried it did not come on.

I do not think the problem is only with the screen because I have the laptop connected to my TV through the VGA cable and the image on there did the same thing once as well. Also even though the laptop powers up and the power light lights up, the word SATELLITE does not light up unless the screen comes on.

Also the CAPS LOCK key has a light on it that should be lighting up(when pressed) as well if everything is working fine and it does not light up either. I got to turn it on for a while yesterday, I was able to restart it(through windows) a couple of times with no problems. As I was about to upgrade the bios, I also tested the external monitor I had connected by pressing F5, the screen went blank and forced me to unplug from AC to restart but once again the screen or the word SATELLITE did not light up.

I know everything works perfectly if it turns on but I don’t know what is keeping it from booting up in the first place.

Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?

    Thank you.

I think I might have solved the problem. I went home yesterday with the intent to check my memory but before I did that I took out the hard drive and turned my laptop on and sure enough it turned on. I tried a few more times and every consecutive time it also turned on. So I put my hard drive back in and everything is working fine except the computer seems to be running slower than usual and I think I am only getting half the RAM I am suppose to get. I will check on that today.

  6. I have a Acer Aspire 5315 and recently the screen has been going black. You can still see everything on screen but just barely. When you unplug and the replug the ac adapter in the back it brightens back up, but only to go black again in a few seconds. If you plug the adapter back in and the screen lights up again and then you quickly unplug it while its lit, then it stays lit. I have replaced the inverter, please help.

  7. I have the HP Compaq Laptop, and the screen is fine, except when looking at photos – everyone looks like they’ve gained 20 pounds! Are there no settings to adjust the screen so it’s not “warped” looking? On old monitors, we could adjust the horizontal and vertical. I think that’s all that needs to be done. I am very grateful for any help!

Hi, my laptop screen has about the same problem, just that it goes black after a few seconds i switch on and whenever i have its power plug on,but it works fine with only on the battery. And when i closes my lid and opens it again, the screen goes back to normal only for a few sec before it goes black dim and i could hardly see anything on the screen. I would appreciate any help. Thanks alot in advance!!

  9. The only way I have been able to currently get around my still pending problem of the “black screen” after months of trying to diagnose problem.
I can ONLY use my laptop using the battery… So, I can only stay on as long as my battery is charged. Once my battery gets critical I MUST turn off my laptop and connect the adapter to charge my battery. Please note: I MUST disconnect my adapter BEFORE turning my laptop on in order to maintain a “lit” screen.
    Crazy!

  10. Hi, my 4 mo. new HP Pavilion Entertainment Laptop had a screen error today. The screen went ALL BLACK ( I was rendering architecture images, and using photoshop) but it had worked fine for several hours. I left for a few mins and the screen saver came on, then a pop up came up that said screen saver screen error and i said end program but then the screen stayed all black except for the toolbar, but if I opened another app. it would open but I wouldnt be able to see it except for the task manager. I cancelled all processes but nothing so I ended up restarting and it works now but should I worry about this? What do I do ?

    Thank you!

  11. I am having the same problem all of a sudden. My computer screen goes almost entirely black. It happens everytime I come out of sleep mode, but otherwise, there does not seem to be any pattern. It seems to have started happening after a Norton update that I had been putting off for a very very long time. (I never accept updates as soon as they are published because at least 50% of the time I have downloaded on the recommended schedule, it has messed my computer up in one way or another). Has anybody solved the problem? If so, what is the solution? I have uninstalled Norton to no avail.

    Hi,

I have a Fujistu-Siemens Amilo M1437G laptop. 3 days ago but wife bumped her head into the back of it while she was waking up, as I had it in my lap in bed and since then my screen has gone all weird.

Primarily, it goes all black even when its running. I have rebooted about 50 times and it starts up ok, but when it comes to me entering my password it goes funny and then goes black. When it does go through, the screen is only half-full instead of a full screen.

When I hit the area where she hit (where the graphics card is) it helps and on one occasion it went back to normal, but then the screen went again.

I’m not sure if its a problem with the graphics card or fac etc etc.

    Any advice please?

Can you test the laptop with an external monitor. If the video on the external monitor also goes funny, there could be a problem with the video card.

Do you know if the video card is a discrete module? If yes, it’s possible that the video card disconnected from the motherboard. You can genteelly press on the video card and push it back into the slot.
    Also, try reseating memory modules.

My laptop will beep, and then the backlight will randomly go out. I know there is a picture because if I reflect it in the light I can see… Somewhat.

  16. I have a Toshiba Satellite A105-S101, it’s about 5 years old now. In the past few days when I wake it up from hibernation, mostly when it hasn’t been hibernating more than ten minutes or so, the monitor goes dead completely. The first time it happened, it was AFTER showing the screen telling me that it was coming out of hibernation, when it should have gone to my Windows main screen. I had to restart the computer to get it to work. Tonight it also stopped working, even when I restarted the computer. I took the laptop apart, checked that everything was plugged in properly and now it works, but I’m afraid that it won’t last. I haven’t tried it with an external monitor because in order to get one I’d have to excavate it from a pile of other stuff and find somewhere to set it all up. There is no backlight when the monitor goes dead, it just doesn’t show anything.

  17. I have a hp dv7-1157cl running vista 64bit recently the screen started going black(with the back light still on and working)at the hp logo screen. it will only flash the logo for an instance, then flash the windows loading screen, then the desk top, for barely a second, then it remains black, everything works fine on a external monitor. when I reinstalled the intel mobile 4 express chipset drivers with an update the screen worked for about twenty hours then reverted to the same issue. after updating the bios, and again reinstalling the chip set drivers it worked for about the same amount of time (with multiple restarts both times, by the way) and the went back to the same behavior, any advice would be welcome.. extremely
