Screen goes black or dim when moved

When I touch the lid or move the laptop a certain way, the screen goes black or the contrast is really dim. The buttons on the laptop are still lit but everything else seems shut off.. but not really. I try everything I can to turn it on but it wont turn on. So I have to force it to shut down. I don’t know why it would do that.

I think there could be a problem with the screen cable. This cable connects the laptop LCD screen to the motherboard and apparently the cable is bad and has to be replaced. That would be my guess.

Here’s what you can do in order to narrow down the problem. Test your laptop with an external monitor attached to the VGA port. Set your laptop to output video to both, the internal screen and external monitor. Now touch the lid or move the laptop. If the laptop screen goes black or dim, but you still can use the laptop with the external monitor, most likely it’s related to the screen cable. Apparently it has damaged wires inside the harness and there is a short inside the harness when you move the lid. If that’s the case, the screen cable has to be replaced.

While the laptop is switched off take out the battery and then hold the on button for a couple of seconds and then put the battery back in.

Sometimes this method works if your laptop appears to be dead. You plug in the power adapter and the power LED lights up, but when you press on the power button nothing happens. I “fixed” many laptops using this method.
By the way, Amorheus forgot to mention that it’s necessary to unplug the power adapter while the laptop is off.

  3. Can anyone help me? The mouse on my hp zx5000 is not working. What could be the problem and how do I fix it?Please someone help me.

    jeremy,
Can you enable/disable the touchpad using a button on the laptop? Maybe it’s just disabled.
Also, that could be a software related issue. You can boot the laptop from a live Linux CD (let’s say Knoppix) and check if the touch pad works in there. If it works in Knoppix, but not in Windows, there is nothing wrong with the hardware. It’s either wrong settings or corrupted software. Try reinstalling Windows.

I am having a similar problem with my Toshiba M305D. Part of the time there are odd lines that appear horizontal when I move the lid. Sometimes moving the lid turns the screen black/gray. Sometimes, if the lid is not positioned correctly it looks sort of like there are moving horizontal lines across the display (horizontal lines that appear to move horizontally).

Does this also sound like a cable problem?

If so, my laptop is under warranty still, but would it be faster for me to fix it myself? How do I do it?

Any help would be great. If I don’t have to, I would like to avoid shipping it off for ages so that TOshiba can fix it.

I’ve seen and repaired a few Satellite M305/M305D laptops with similar problems. Most likely your problem is related to the display cable and it has to be replaced.

I wouldn’t do it. The laptop is still under warranty and I would recommend using the warranty.

  7. I think I have figured out that I have a bad cable based on all the blogs that I have read. I have ordered a new cable and found a blog that gives me details on how to replace the cable (https://www.screentekinc.com/lcd-removal-instructions_en,ibm.shtml). I’m not really experienced in this kind of stuff, but overall, I am VERY detail oriented and carefully read instructions — so I am a fool to try and replace this cable myself?

  8. I recently replaced my lcd on my dell inspiron e1505 and it works fine when plugged in, but when I unplug the screen will go blank until I restart with the power cable plugged back in. I have tried booting the laptop without it being plugged in and it will just flash and then go blank. Can someone please help?

    Thanks in advance

I have a Toshiba M300 something as well and my screen does the same thing, at first when I jiggled it it stopped but now it is just getting worse and worse. Is it covered under the warranty to get it replaced if it has been doing this since I bought it?

  10. Hi, I am having a bit of the same issue. white screen, or lined screen. The difference is , if I push on the left upper corner of the LCD screen, I am able to use it just fine. Before this started, I would sometimes have to open and close the lid a few times before anything would appear, but only sometimes. Does this sound like bad lcd, or bad connection?

I have a Gateway 7215 (I know pretty old) but I never had a problem until now. My screen goes completely black! The light turns on when I press it but nothing on the screen. The only things that lights up are the power button & the light that indicates the a/c cord is plugged in. also I noticed that the charge light never went off even though I left it charging overnight! Does this sound like a screen cable problem or is it something more serious? please let me know. thanks

  12. Hi , I bought a replacement screen from http://www.nylaptopparts.com but it still didnt solve my problem , then I read up more about these issues and found that it was the motherboard after all. Got a new motherboard and that finally put the issues at rest.

After I close the lid with the laptop running, the screen does not come back on when i reopen the lid. The program is still running, per se a movie, I can here the movie, but no matter what I do, push keys, the display does not come back on.

  14. I have a compaq presario. When I opened the lid today all I had were horizontal lines running down the screen. I found that if i close the lid partally I have a normal screen and the computer works fine. Can anyone tell me why opening it causes this problem , one that I have never had before.

  15. I am getting the opposite to most people. My laptop sony vaio VGN-CS26S will run fine without plug-in the ac adapter. It will charge with the plug in. But when I try and use the plug-in and run my laptop (for better light and longer use) it turns my screen black. If I disconnect the adapter and close the lid on the laptop, my screen will come back and I am good to go.
the screen only goes black. If you put a torch light against the screen, you will see everything is working fine. Can someone help me.

The light dims completely, so you cannot see the screen at all?

  21. I have a Dell Latitude D620. It has recenty suffered intermittent problems with the screen going black. If I move the lid about (opening and closing it) it will usually come back on. However, I have now noticed some icons are unresponsive and some boxes do not open fully (they stay transparent and when I close some of them , parts of them remain on the screen. The machine will then become unresponsive, but the cursor still moves around. Sometimes it will then emit a continuous beep and I have to turn it off.
    Can anybody help?
    Thnks

Ok, I have some of the above problems, lol, but not all… with a few extra issues to throw in! Ok, Dell Latitude D820. I recently had the keyboard replaced so it could very likely be a bad connection to the LCD as stated in previous problems, BUT… when start in safe mode, safe mode with networking, or anything besides a normal boot up I don’t have any problems. Boot in safe mode, no problems… Boot normaly BLACK SCREEN!?!?!?! If it was a bad connection or loose connection, it would still be bad and not work in safe mode, right? If so, can u steer me in the right direction? I am afraid it is something simple in the settings, power options or something like that. I don’t want to look like a complete idiot taking this in to get fixed and pay outrageous fees for them to change my settings.

Any and all suggestions or pointers on how to fix this is greatly appreciated.

  23. I have had this similar problem before. I fixed it somehow at random but I don’t remember how I did it. Last night the power went out and now when I plug in my charger on my crappy zv6000, the screen goes dim instead of bright. It’s supposed to get brighter not darker. =.= Anything I can do to fix this?

Did you try adjusting the LCD screen brightness with AC adapter plugged in?
I believe on HP laptops you have to hold down the Fn key and at the same time keep tapping on the F8 key.

  26. when i plug in ac adapter to my toshiba L-305 laptop, screen goes white i dont know whats wrong with it i need to shut down my laptop using power button, but when i am using my laptop with battery then its completely ok, can anybody tell me how could i fix that problem

    i bet it works/

  28. I’m having trouble with my Dell insipiron laptop screen. Sometimes the screen will freeze, dim, and show greater detail of pixels until I readjust the position of the screen. I can hear the laptop startup chimes if I shut it down and boot it back up. Sometimes when I do this verticle lines will display in the middle and side of the lcd. If I keep moving the lcd up and down I can get it to work right, but sometimes I have to do this a bunch of times before the screen works. I believe that it is just an issue with the lcd or lcd cable, but I wanted another opinion.

HAHA- MARK is a genius!!!This worked a treat for me – No idea what it fixes but it fixed something – Have a Acer aspire 5740

Got a fix for mine- turns out of got a loose screen / bezel – just need 15 minutes and a screw driver to repair….

  31. The screen flickering issues are related to the LCD cable. I had a customer with the same issue. When the lid was moved, the data would go on and off on the screen. Thinking it was defective LCD, I had him order another one. Upon taking the screen apart, I flexed the LCD cable and realized that that was the issue. I am now having him purchase a new cable.

  32. Atef Farouk

i’ve the same problem but problem is solved after logging off, this is not a problem of cable at all

  33. I just got my screen repaired and the guy did some half ass job so when I touch the back of my lptop screen in a certain spot it goes grey

OK I have a Toshiba laptop I bought brand new a yr ago. 2 days after taking it out of box it started to make the screen go black. I was in middle of using it and the screen just went black. If I move it just right I can sometimes get it to come on and stay on. This is after moving it back and forth either little by little or a lot, or it will look almost blavk but i can make out pic on desktop. When it runs it’s perfect. I usually just say F it and use it hooked up to my 72in TV but I’d like to be able to use it without the tv. Also it won’t acknowledge my hdmi cord anymore either. I tried cord on others works fine. Any ideas? Please email answer I don’t come on here often. Thanks
